About the Jam Darling A Soldier thoughts on Love and War told through Letters eBook Virginia Aighton
While this book focuses on “Jim’s Story,” it is really the story of all young men who over seventy years ago found themselves in a place beyond their imagination. When only connections with home can keep them grounded and sane. The story of Jim Allen (an ordinary lad from Lancashire) while situated during the Second World War will resonate with young people across the world that are committed to fighting for their country to ensure freedom and democracy. The author, Virginia Aighton recounts the true story of her father who has to leave behind the girl with whom he is passionately in love with to fight men and ideology from Nazi Germany. In the process of describing Jim’s love for Isabella (Ella), his marriage, and the birth of their first child, Aighton also explains the events of the Second World War. The accuracy of this social history is due to the original letters, photos, telegrams, Field Service postcards, notes on enemy identifications, lesson tactics, Guards Depot passes, bullets, and amazingly 300 love letters. Many of Jim’s letters focus on the war, his love for Ella, and typical for the era his need for “cigs.” He often suggests that he and Ella though in different places smoke a cigarette at the same time of day so that they “can be together.”
This book is engaging, as a love story but also an excellent source for students and school children wanting to really know how the war impacted the young men who volunteered and the families they left behind. The primary source documents enable the reader to truly understand the courage that our relatives showed as they entered an arena of war fare so alien to everything that they had previously experienced in their own lives. Unlike a textbook “Jim’s story: A case of love and war,” truly engages the reader, and increases their understanding of the impact of war both close to home and in an arena far away.
In our fast paced technological world young people’s expression of love and passion can be found on the pages of Facebook or in a twitter. The writing of “love letters,” is a lost art, which I regret. To read Jim’s letters is to enter the heart and mind of a passionate young man deeply in love who at a critical time in his life left his love behind to fight for his country, was injured but never lost his enthusiasm for life, a belief in his country, and a great love for his family. You cannot read this book without becoming emotionally involved. We owe Aighton great thanks for allowing us to share her parent’s love letters. I strongly recommend this book.

About the Jam Darling A Soldier thoughts on Love and War told through Letters eBook Virginia Aighton Reviews
I confess, I got a little bogged down while reading the many letters. This book would delight family members, however. Both my parents were in WWII (with the Marines in the Pacific and with the WACs) and I found myself wishing they had saved letters to and from home. This is really a story about a love between a husband and a wife, and it comes through.
Reading this book first shows just how much love 2 people have for one another during a time of world war 2 and the things they did without, the Times they spent apart, and what both had to endure, well no wonder they were known as the WORLDS GREATEST GENERATION. I really enjoyed reading this book about the five and a half years of their lives during a time of this world's worst time and war. They author and daughter made one feel that they were right there with her parents some 70 plus years ago Thanks for the story
