Kera and Rand, wife and husband, torn apart by different desires. She can no longer take the lonely, concrete city life where he works to see his dreams come true. The least of what she needs -- never-mind the country with its fresh air and quietude -- is for her children to feel the love of their absentee father. As Kera determines to bring her family and marriage together again, everything changes overnight. Countrywide tensions boil over, and these two young, willful souls are catapulted into a cross-country rescue mission that turns into a survival expedition on foot and horseback. As these estranged lovers forge their way across a once beautiful but now treacherous landscape they must learn a new way of thinking and living, and use every skill born into them to last and save their children.

Strong female and male leads. A fast read, yet epic in scope.

Rand and Kera Priven are having difficulties in their marriage. Rand is a professional photographer and spends almost his entire life working and never sees his family; not unlike many in our society today. In an attempt to protect her children, Kera sends them to a retreat in Washington state with the intentions of confronting Rand. Much to her horror, terrorists have infiltrated the countries control systems and the entire country is at a virtual standstill.

Kera convinces an extremely reluctant Rand to travel the 2500 miles from New York to Washington state to collect their children. The journey places them in harms way and they face evil that no one should have to encounter. Citizen militias are protesting across the country and waging war on the government. Will they reach their children in time and will their marriage be saved? Will they even survive the trip across country?

I do not even know where to begin. I have read many many books that I have loved; but I have to tell you, this book left me speechless. You want to think that something like this could never happen. After reading this book, I would never say never. The storyline is absolutely fantastic and everything just flows and falls into place. I wanted to hate both Rand and Kera; but there is something about them that would not allow me to do so.

In amidst the turmoil in the country, there is still love and devotion. There are those who are willing to go the extra mile and help no matter what it may cost them. This is a story of change and the harrowing path it takes to get there. It is a story of horror, brutality, friendship, love and forgiveness. I have never read a book that has had me in such emotional upheavel. Even so, I would read this book again in a heart beat.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a well written book with a wonderful storyline and characters. After reading it, you may take a second or third look at what is happening in our country. You may never look at things the same again.

I want to thank Patrick for providing me with a copy of his book for reading on my IPad. I was not compensated in any way except for the privilege of reading it. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

I give Across the Desperate Miles 5 plus stars out of 5.

ACROSS THE DESPERATE MILES edition by Patrick Michael Murphy Jan Takac Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really love this book! From the beginning, I was drawn into the story of the main characters, Rand and Kera, and their failing marriage. As horrifying events start unfolding, I could not stop reading-- this is a real page-turner! The author develops all of his characters and story lines in a way that made them stay with me long after I finished the book. There is so much action, adventure, heartbreak, inspiration and many thought-provoking scenes that often made me gasp out loud.

Across the Desperate Miles brings up situations that very possibly could transpire in our world today, and the way the characters deal with them is fascinating and interesting. I found myself imagining how I would react! I particularly loved Murphy's description of the vastness of the United States-- he brought alive areas that I have never visited, as well as the myriad of people Rand and Kera meet-- some kind, some not so kind.

What I appreciated most in this book is that it has so many levels and different aspects-- this story will appeal to those who love action-adventures, books about relationships, travelogues, military history and stories about people confronting real danger and self-searching in the face of possibly losing everything dear to them. It is written in beautifully descriptive and realistic prose, and will draw you in as you follow this amazing journey!
I received this book as a review copy.

At first I had major problems with Randy (or Rand as he liked to call himself). He's arrogant and assuming, plus he treats his family like crap. He's so caught up in making his photography studio make it big, that he starts to behave like he's too good for those around him. His wife Kera began their relationship with the same goals in mind as her husband, but as time went on her family (two children) became more important to her than the fast paced, hostile world as a model/photographer. She decided she wanted out, and Rand really had not forgiven her for it. Things come to a head when she decides to leave him, and sends the kids away to save them from seeing any drama that may occur, while she figures out what to do with her marriage.

Then things get a little crazy. Kera and Rand end up crossing the country in order to get to their children during this chaotic time, and this is where the real adventure begins. Kera really begins to show her mettle after her and Rand are seperated, and Rand really begins to grow as a person.

During the cross country adventure I really began to connect with Rand. Through all of the hardships he faced while trying to get to his wife and kids, he began to really think about what was important in life. He began to get his priorities straight and to see how absent of a father and husband he had been. Both Kera and Rand go through some terrible situations, and these situations definitely made this novel a page turner! I had trouble putting the book down once I got a few chapters into it, because I didn't know from page to page whether or not they would even survive! It is most definitely an adventure story, and Murphy comes up with some incredibly original predicaments!

At times I thought it was a little over the top, and I started thinking; "What's next, aliens?" Now looking back I think this crazy unpredictability definitely added to my inability to put the book down. I just knew that if I didn't keep reading, I'd have to wait until later on for the next crazy, adventurous wonderfully descriptive sequence of events!
Also, I was a little annoyed with how the novel ended, only because I was rooting for it to end one way, and then it ended in a way I would have NEVER guessed. In a way I guess you can consider that a good thing, because as a reader it definitely had that "HOLY CRAP" feeling at the end!

It is definitely a great book! It has all the elements of a great story, and some of the political situations that are focused on in this novel are pretty interesting to think about.
